Renovating Australian Waterways
At Mitre 10 we understand that water is essential to human life and to
the health of the environment. In partnership with Landcare Australia,
we made a concerted effort to clean up Australian waterways. We sponsored
waterway projects throughout Australia which assisted in tackling issues
such as salinity, soil erosion and water pollution. Our store owners also
have the opportunity to become involved in community-oriented programs
to make real improvements in their local areas.

Willow Control in South-Eastern NSW
The spread of willows is a serious problem for Australian waterways,
as they degrade aquatic habitat, physically replace native species and
reduce access to rivers. Two Landcare networks in the South East of NSW
have joined hands to undertake willow removal projects.
The aim of the project is to stop the further spread of willows, particularly
seeding varieties and young establishing plants. Project activities occur
in three different areas, namely the Deua and Tuross catchments near Narooma
and on Thredbo River near the Kosciuszko Road picnic area.
This project leads to improved water quality and quantity through reduced
winter leaf drop and reduced water uptake and sediment trapping in the
rivers.
