Renovating Australian Waterways, continued
Howard River Restoration - Northern Territory
Howard Springs Mitre 10 have been involved with Landcare groups in the
Howard River Catchment for some time. The focus of this project is to
undertake weed control, revegetation and fire management to improve the
overall health of Howard River.
Large areas of the catchment have been invaded by Gamba grass. Gamba
grass out-competes native grasses, suppresses native seedlings and poses
a fire threat. This grass, along with other weeds, is removed from the
affected areas.
Once the Gamba grass has been removed, revegetation takes place in strategic
locations. Revegetation of other sites where weed seeds are produced is
also undertaken as part of this project.
As part of the project, strategic burning of high threat areas within
the catchment is also planned and undertaken in cooperation with groups
such as the NT Fire Service and Vernon Region Weed & Fire Management
Officer.

Controlled burning is an important part of fire management.

Trees are planted to revegetate the area after the fire.
