Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions, continued
Area 1 - Gas and Oil Exploration and Production
During 2001, Origin Energy started a four-year project to reduce greenhouse
gases from a gas plant situated near our gas fields at Yellowbank, western
Queensland.
We use 'flaring' technology to burn waste methane gas, which would have
been released into the air. By burning methane gas, carbon dioxide is
still produced, however this gas is much less damaging to the environment.
This project will save about 700,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases - the
same as taking all of Canberra's 170,000 cars off the road for a full
year!
