Telstra's Environmental Impacts
In working towards Telstra's goal of becoming a more environmentally
sustainable company, Telstra has assessed its impact on the environment
in all areas of its operations, in order to find ways to reduce these
impacts. Generally, the figures described below are relevant from 1 July
2000 to 30 June 2001.
Natural environment
Telstra operations cover a land area of more than 7.6 million square
kilometres
- This includes habitat containing more than one million plant and animal
species, the majority of which are only found within Australia, and
- Includes approximately 5,800 land and marine conservation areas, covering
57.3 million hectares, which is 6.4 per cent of the total land area.
Fixed networks
- Telstra maintains 3.2 million kilometres of aerial and underground
optical fibre cable, which may result in visual impacts and potential
erosion along cable routes
- Telstra has approximately 11,000 network and non-network sites using
energy to power the network and for air-conditioning, heating and lighting.
Resources
- Approximately 71 million litres of fuel are consumed in Telstra buildings,
networks and vehicles
- Approximately 3 million gigajoules of electricity are used to operate
Telstra networks, computers, air-conditioners etc.
