Janice Mascini and Vesna Suntovski receiving their Supporters award from Jane StewartThe postal service provides an important communication link between people, communities, businesses and nations. In a country as large as Australia, the postal service is an essential part of everyday life.

Since Australia’s first official post office opened in Sydney in 1809, Australia Post has provided Australians with one of the best mail and parcel services in the world.

And, in the course of providing its services, Australia Post has made a real commitment to reducing its environmental impact. Its approach has seen it emerge as a leader in environmental management practices in the service industry.

In 1998, Australia Post was awarded the Banksia Award in the Government category for its environmental leadership. This award was given in recognition of a number of initiatives, including:

  • Implementation of a new environmental management system;
  • Adoption of the Greenhouse Challenge program;
  • Development of a waste recycling program; and
  • Development of a significant wetland area.

Since joining the Greenhouse Challenge in July 1996, Australia Post has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 28.1%.
