Norske Skog - Making Newsprint with less energy
APIC member Norske Skog is Australia's only producer of newsprint.
The company has reduced its absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 10.8
per cent for the period 1990-2000, and by 17 per cent when sequestration
is taken into account. This has been achieved in parallel with an increase
in newsprint production over the same period of 21 per cent.
This
has been achieved as a result of a number of activities, particularly
the incorporation of recycled fibre into the newsprint paper making process.
The production of pulp which is suitable for newsprint is a very energy-intensive
process - however, the use of recycled fibre in the process uses one-fifth
the amount of energy.
Substituting recycled fibre for some virgin fibre can therefore result
in a significant reduction in energy use, which also reduces greenhouse
gas emissions.
