Greening our Transport Fleet

Hon Ian Macfarlane, Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources
presents
Australia Post’s Patrick Williams with the Greener Motoring
Certificate.
Australia Post operates one of the country's largest transport fleets.
We also run one of the most energy efficient fleets in Australia and
play a leading role within the transport industry. Our dream is to operate
a totally ‘green’ fleet.
To reduce the environmental impacts
of our transportation operations we have looked at everything from
alternative fuels and fuel efficiency
to wind drag and surface area. Some of our successes include:
- Converting
our semi-trailer fleet to B-Double trucks. These 460 horsepower vehicles
have many features to reduce fuel consumption such as in-built
speed limitation, cruise control and an ability to carry 33% more
parcels than their predecessor. Even the canopies have been improved:
aerodynamic
construction has reduced wind drag, saving 900,000 litres of fuel
each year.

- Trialling LPG and Natural Gas Vehicles has resulted in the introduction
of a propane-fuelled truck for operation between Dandenong and Melbourne.
The use of this truck is expected to save approximately 9 tonnes
of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
- Converting our mail van fleet to diesel
fuel has saved an amazing 1.5 million litres of fuel a year.
