Waste to Energy
In Waste to Energy facilities, waste materials are burnt in huge furnaces
to create heat and generate electricity.
There are 98 of these facilities
operating in the United States. Together, they generate the energy
equivalent of 2,700 MW of electricity, while disposing of more than 29
million tons
of trash.
SWANA’s Waste-to-Energy Technical Division regularly monitors,
reviews and comments on issues and actions directly affecting the
waste to energy operations of our members. Some of these issues include:
- plant
operations;
- pollution control;
- public education;
- ash management and recycling;
- and supporting the development of new
technologies.
Recent initiatives include the promotion of significant reductions in
the air emissions of larger waste to energy plants.
