Landfill Gas
The gases created by decomposing waste in landfills can be collected
and used to generate heat and electricity. As well as providing a renewable
energy source, this reduces the amount of methane entering the atmosphere
and contributing to the greenhouse effect.
For the last 25 years, SWANA's Landfill Gas Management Division has
been the leading authority on issues surrounding landfill gas collection
and utilization. The Division focuses on promoting the use of landfill
gas as a sustainable and renewable energy source, and has taken an active
role in working to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions from solid
waste landfills.
