Innovations
Recent research undertaken by SWANA’s Applied Research Foundation has been focused on bioreactor landfills. A bioreactor landfill is a sanitary landfill that uses microbiological processes to decompose organic waste in 5 to 10 years, compared to 30 to 100 years in traditional landfills. Our research in this area has resulted in the development of important
publications on how we can better manage solid waste and reduce the
environmental impacts of landfill sites.
