Koalas at Amcor's Petrie Mill
Amcor's Petrie Cartonboard Mill in Queensland is situated on 237 hectares
of land, much of which is still bushland. The Mill has set out to protect
the local wildlife and work cooperatively with neighbours and the local
community.
For many years, Petrie has sought professional expertise to advise on
tree planting, land clearing, species identification and habitat protection.
A forester has been employed to supervise planting and advise on tree
selection.
Additional gum trees have been planted on site to enhance the natural
habitat and food supply for koalas. A recent survey showed that there
was a group of about twelve koalas who have made Amcor Cartonboard their
home.
At
Petrie, some 206 species of birds and 16 amphibian species have been identified.
In addition 24 species of butterfly, 11 reptiles and 8 species of mammals
have been recorded on site. All of Australia's kingfisher species have
been observed on site.
Petrie's workforce of 300 take a keen interest in their site and want
to see that it continues to be an ecological oasis within the surrounding
urban landscape.
