PaperlinX - Funding Community Conservation

PaperlinX is the manufacturer of Reflex Paper, Australia's leading office
paper brand. PaperlinX has joined forces in recent years with the conservation
group Conservation Volunteers Australia to fund a range of school-based
conservation projects via the Reflex Habitat program.
The Reflex Habitat program invites entries from primary and secondary
schools and awards three prizes each year in every Australian state and
territory. Under the program, schools can win cash and practical project
assistance for projects including:
- Creating wetland habitats;
- Establishing a native nature reserve;
- Making the school a safe habitat for native frogs, birds or insects;
and
- Starting a wildlife corridor.
Students work alongside volunteers from Conservation Volunteers Australia
to involve them in hands-on conservation activities.
The site of proposed projects must either be on school grounds or near
the school, so students can have easy access to the project and can be
closely involved. Proposals must be suited to the existing habitat of
the area, to help spark students' interest in the local environment, and
native vegetation must be an integral component of the proposal.
Entries
are judged by a Conservation Volunteers Australia judging panel which
assesses entries on how they will improve the natural environment; how
students will be involved, and how the project will create curriculum
links and an ongoing learning environment.
PaperlinX and Conservation Volunteers Australia both recognise the importance
of involving young Australians in practical conservation projects to ensure
the future of our environment. Among the projects funded in the last year
have been the conversion of an overgrown garden into a frog pond; turning
a stormwater retention pond into a freshwater lake habitat, and creating
a habitat of native vegetation.
