Greenhouse Challenge

The Greenhouse Challenge is a Federal Government environment program.
Its goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the voluntary
action of companies and organisations.
At Australia Post, our greenhouse gas emissions are created mainly through:
- Burning
fossil fuels in our transport fleet;
- The use of energy for power and
lighting; and
- The generation of waste.
Joining the Greenhouse Challenge has helped us to recognise the potential
impacts of our everday operations, which include:
|
|
washing around 10,500 vehicles per week |
Providing postal services at
almost 4,500 postal outlets
|
 |
 |
using the services of around 3,000 road transport
contractors across the country
|
running more than
7,100 motorbikes |
 |
|
and carrying 47.8 million kilograms of
airfreight every year. |
|
What we are now doing is controlling the level of our emissions by making
changes to our facilities and vehicle fleets and by being smarter about
how we do our jobs. Since joining the Greenhouse Challenge program in
1996, Australia Post has reduced its greenhouse emissions by 28.1%. This
means a saving of 95,441 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Based on this progress and our planning for the future, we expect an
overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 42.31%, or 143,803
tonnes of carbon dioxide, by the year 2005 – that’s comparable
to planting around 30,000 trees.
