Hundreds of frogs, birds and other native flora and fauna have made their home in the wetlands adjoining Australia Post’s mail processing centre in Dandenong, thanks to a special partnership between Post and Melbourne Water.

Plants in wetlands

At a cost of $2.4 million, this entirely new and healthy ecosystem was created in 1998 to tackle water quality contamination problems.

These wetlands are also an important open-air laboratory for people researching hydrology and monitoring water quality treatment. And today they are contributing to the improved health of Port Phillip Bay’s ecosystem as cleaner water flows through to south-eastern beaches and the Bay.

As the first of its type it has formed the basis for additional wetlands across Melbourne to improve the quality of our river ecosystems.
