Cleaner production means thinking about your work and designing your
work processes to reduce the amount of waste being produced, or prevent
waste from being created in the first place.
As part of our service to customers, City West Water provides advice
and assistance in the areas of cleaner production and waste minimisation.
We have also formed a cleaner production partnership with EPA Victoria,
under which we have selected three specific areas for project work. These
are:
- Waste management planning;
- Greasy waste management; and
- Solvent waste.
These project areas focus on improving waste management plans for our
customers, reducing quantities of greasy waste (trade waste containing
fats and oils) and organic solvents that are discharged to our sewers.
Waste Minimisation
We are always looking for new waste minimisation initiatives to benefit
our customers and the environment. We are committed to the EPA Victoria's
Industrial Waste Management Policies and to promoting waste minimisation
amongst our customers and the community. Our approach to waste minimisation
is based on the waste management hierarchy that focuses on the following
steps in order of preference:
1. Avoidance
2. Reuse
3. Recycle
4. Recovery of energy
5. Storage
6. Treatment
7. Containment or disposal
