Recycling Waste
In our City West Water offices, we have an active in-house Eco Action
Team who help us to recycle any paper and plastic and other daily waste
we create. Even our raw fruit and vegetable scraps, teabags, and coffee
granules are recycled in a worm farm.
Recycling Water
City West Water is committed to a State Government initiative to increase
the amount of recycled water being used for industrial or commercial use
to 20% by the year 2010.
As part of the Enviro Altona Project, we have been investigating the
possibility of recycling wastewater at our Altona Treatment Plant. The
State Government has recently announced an upgrade to the Altona plant
which will support City West Water in achieving the 20% recycling rate
by 2010. Tertiary treated wastewater may be used for irrigating golf courses,
parks and sporting grounds in our licence area. It may also be used by
commercial and industrial properties for equipment and process cleaning,
as wash-down water or in cooling towers, reducing the amount of quality
drinking water used for these purposes.

The solid waste from treated wastewater, called sludge or biosolids,
can also be recycled. Properly treated and composted sludge is rich in
nutrients and organic matter and can be used as a soil conditioner, which
is subject to strict EPA guidelines.
