St Michael's Primary School was the winner of our 2000 Award in the Education
and Training category. Students and teachers created a multimedia presentation
to educate other students outside their school about the importance of
recycling and caring for the environment.
Students from Patterson Class at St Michael's decided to create an interactive
story titled "The Environment" after visiting local wetlands
and witnessing first hand the destructive and detrimental effects of pollution
and litter. Their aim was to assist in the preservation of wetlands by
educating the global community that directly contributes to the problem.
For more information on this project visit their website at www.stmlnmlb.melb.catholic.edu.au.
Previous Winners - Friends of Westona Wetlands
The Friends of Westona Wetlands (FOWW) won our Community Environment
Award in 2000 in the Community Groups & Local Government category.
Friends of Westona Wetlands was formed in 1993 by seven local residents
concerned about the degraded conditions of Truganina Swamp. FOWW has helped
transform Truganina Swamp into a magnificent 148 hectare wetland. The
wetlands feature a footbridge made from recycled material, built over
a waterway to protect sensitive areas, and a bird hide built to allow
the local community and visitors to the area to observe the bird life.

The Friends of Westona Wetlands regularly monitor water quality.
Ongoing activities aimed at conserving biodiversity in the area, include:
- Bird monitoring;
- Revegetation;
- Seed collecting and propagation;
- Interpretative signage; and
- Water monitoring.

By recognising and supporting FOWW, we hope to illustrate the significant
environmental benefits that can be created through the dedication of local
community groups.
