Renovating Australian Waterways, continued
Cooloola Landcare Conservation Projects Program - Queensland
This program is managed by Gympie & District Landcare and involves
the following revegetation projects: Clean-up 2001 Mary River Revegetation
Project; Commissioner Gully Revegetation Project; Deep Creek Revegetation
Project; Yabba Creek Cod Habitat Revegetation Project; and Scrubby Gully
Revegetation. Funding from Mitre 10 is used to enhance the works at one
of these program sites.
The primary focus for this group has been on the revegetation of high-profile
riparian corridors in and around Gympie. Over the last two and a half
years Gympie & District Landcare and its supporters have planted 33,000
plants on difficult riverbank and creek bank sites. Support from the local
community has been high with many of the population of Gympie regularly
coming to the Community Tree Plantings. Various community groups have
also adopted particular sites for planting and maintenance.

Big Swamp Wetland Project - South Australia
The Big Swamp Wetland Project is a high profile site situated 20km north
west of Port Lincoln, adjacent to the Flinders Highway. Big Swamp is a
significant wetland area of Australia and is important as a breeding area
for a number of bird species. A local Landcare group works on restoration,
preservation and promotion of Big Swamp. Mitre 10 funding has enabled:
- The building of four permanent islands and one floating island for
bird life to nest in. All of the islands are planted with rushes, sedges
and other native grasses and can be moved to other areas if nesting
does not occur.
- The construction of an Interpretive Centre and picnic table at the
parking bay to encourage interested people to learn about and enjoy
the wetland area.
