Sydney 2000 Olympic Games

Evidence of our ability to make advances in environmentally beneficial practices is our relationship formed with the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG) to the help deliver the "Green Games"

Visy Special Events established a closed loop recycling system for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, which enabled approximately 3000 tonnes of material to be recovered and recycled from more than 100 venues.

As part of the waste minimisation program, we:

  • Provided 100% recycled furniture for the Olympic Media Centre, which was collected after the Games and recycled again;
  • Supplied recycled and recyclable packaging products for fast food and drinks;
  • Provided facilities and equipment at venues to implement public place recycling; and
  • Provided for collection, transportation and recycling of all waste other than medical, veterinary, quarantine and residual waste.

We also provided the Olympics with furniture and partitions manufactured from 100% recycled materials to fit out an area equivalent to a 40-storey building, and supplied enough recycled food and beverage containers to feed nine million spectators.
