Waste Activities
Newspaper publishers have established waste reduction measures within
their own plants to reduce the amount of newsprint used in the production
of newspaper. Examples of these measures include:
- Reducing the basis weight of the newsprint
- Increasing the size of the paper reels to reduce the waste which occurs
when changing to a new reel
- Improved transport methods which reduced the damage to reels; and
monitoring of circulation trends to reduce the number of unsold copies.
Energy and Air Activities
Our main newsprint supplier, Norske Skog, is a participant in the Commonwealth
Government's Greenhouse Challenge Program. Company initiatives between
1990 and 2000 have resulted in a 17% reduction in net greenhouse emissions.
Emissions per tonne of newsprint have fallen by 31% over the same period.
The main contributors to this achievement were lower energy use due to
the introduction of recycled fibre and more efficient use of energy and
steam. The company also owns significant areas of plantation, which act
as carbon sinks.
