Bayswater South Primary School
Step-by-step guide to the schools success
- Seek support from the School Principal. This is absolutely essential
in creating a successful program.
- Create Leaders. At Bayswater South, a Greening the Future Committee
was formed, made up of enthusiastic teachers in the school. Each
teacher was assigned responsibility as leader in one of the areas of
water; waste;
external environment; school supplies; raising awareness; education;
and energy.
Take
away an action from each meeting. Even if they are small steps,
it is important to keep things moving!
- Ensure student ownership. Students must be involved every step of
the way and must feel empowered to make changes. At Bayswater South,
a student committee has been formed, led by the school captains.
It is the students who come up with the ideas, take on responsibilities,
and
work towards their goals. Most importantly, if a leading teacher
leaves the school, the infrastructure is in place for the school to
carry on
the momentum of the program without them.
- Source help. Parents are a very valuable resource – many have
time and skills that they are more than happy to contribute. Forming
a partnership with the school council can also be very beneficial.
- Source resources for funding. Do some research in your area – there
are many small grants available for schools from both government
and private sources. National programs, such as the Mitre
10 Junior Landcare
Grants Program,
offer grants in a range of areas. Government rebates are also often
available for infrastructure changes such as the installation of alternative
water
and energy sources. Also contact your local council, local energy
or water provider, local nursery and other local businesses, who may
also
be happy to help with funding or in-kind support.
- Keep acknowledging contributions from students and the school community,
keep recognising and publicising your achievements and, most importantly,
keep it fun!
