Case Studies
Bayswater South Primary School
Bayswater South’s achievements so
far
In less than a year, the school has made incredible achievements in
the following areas:
Waste
A three bin recycling system has been incorporated into every classroom
in the school – for paper, compost and other recyclables.
- A large
school compost bin has been installed to recycle garden and food
waste.
- A worm farm has been donated and installed by parents of the school.
As well as recycling the schools organic waste, the worm farm will
be used as a business venture for grade 6 students – who will
sell the organic fertiliser produced in the worm farm.
- Waste reductions have
been measured and reported on by students to determine the success
rate of the changes.
- The school is also entering the Clean-Away Wheelie
Bin competition, by decorating their waste bins with colourful
environmental messages.
Raising Awareness
Earlier in the year, the school held a ‘Green
Day’. Students
wore green clothes to school, held competitions and displayed their
work on environmental themes.
- A ‘Green points’ system has been
introduced to the school. Under this system, the school captains carry
out random inspections of
classrooms and award points based on environmental performance. Classrooms
compete for an award each week.
School supplies
- Office and cleaning supplies have been reviewed to determine
whether there are more environmentally friendly alternatives.
- Using
money raised on the school’s Green Day, Enjo cleaning gloves
have been purchased. These gloves can be used to clean surfaces without
the use of harsh chemicals, and can even by used by the students
to clean their own desks!
External Environment
- A working bee of parents and community members have
removed many weeds and non-native species from the school gardens.
These have
been replaced
with flora indigenous to the local area, donated by the local
council.
- Each week, one parent is rostered to come in for a lunch-hour
to help students maintain their gardens.
The school also has the following plans for the future:
Water
- There are plans to install a water filter system to improve the
drinking water of students and teachers.
- Rainwater tanks are being
installed, which will allow harvesting of rainwater for use on
the school gardens.
- The installation of a greywater reuse system is also
being considered.
Energy
- There are plans to install solar panels to provide the school
with a renewable energy source.
